“Engineering is the closest thing to magic that exists in the world.” (Elon Musk)

Problem solving sits at the heart of design and engineering. Where others might falter, engineers simply roll up their sleeves and say challenge accepted. Which is exactly what architectural engineer Monty Ravenscroft has spent his life doing. Here, Monty offers his expert insights into the process - one that’s seen him invent the world’s first foldaway toilet bracket, design the largest single pane of moving glass in Europe, and create a space-saving home filled with moving elements that captured global attention on Ch4’s Grand Designs programme.

Networking technology and cellular connectivity has advanced rapidly over the last 12 years and although transformative, when designing a new deployment, can be confusing.

This presentation will outline the challenges of legacy networks with increasing traffic, and the complexities of connectivity today. During the session, we will look at future trends and address the question: when will navigating the complex world of IoT get any easier? For device designers and integrators, knowing where to focus is the first challenge. We'll share best approaches and how you can stay ahead in the ever-evolving world of IoT and cellular connectivity.

Rated current values found on datasheets serve as a guide for the selection of passive magnetic components. However, the temperature rise in these components can be influenced by many factors that are not always reported in datasheets by all manufacturers. This gives a false sense of what the rated current values represent.

In this presentation, we aim to introduce a new measurement for rated current adopted by Wurth electronics, based on standard IEC 62024-2:2020. In addition, we provide an online tool for calculating rated current based on PCB/Track dimensions. This gives an accurate measurement for rated current as well as your own design value.

One of the greatest challenges in technical selling is understanding your client’s true needs. Much like when your child asks, with the best of intentions, for their paint set, and the under-cautious will later find that it’s to fix a wedding photo that they spilled juice on, and that the results are not quite aligned with the child’s vision, establishing the underlying reason for a client request often helps to identify a very different, and far more effective solution. Taking a look at real world examples, I’ll attempt to convey Solsta’s approach to bridging the gap between specification and application.

In a world of laws designed for humans, generative AI raises new questions on how a system designed to reward human ingenuity can be applied in the 5th Industrial Revolution. Starting with a whistle-stop tour of the how, what and why of obtaining patents and registered design protection, this session will look at where IP law stands on the ownership of inventions and designs created using AI, and will consider the challenges and risks that AI brings in IP.

Modular systems provide high reliability, low cost and long-life cycle solutions for many markets including medical, industrial and harsh environments. They also offer an opportunity to updating obsolete and legacy designs.

In this workshop, we will cover the mechanical descriptions of example modular systems, the benefit in solving manufacturing challenges, how to make electrical connections to a PCB or a pad pin (with an emphasis on custom pad pins), understanding spring pin stroke to overcome tolerance stack-up. It will cover questions for custom design of pogo pins, what components of a pogo and pin that can be modified, technologies that use pogo pins.

Design Engineers are responsible for up to 80% of a product's environmental impact. As the grid becomes greener, and we move from fossils, to synthetics, green hydrogen and biofuels, the contribution of embodied carbon in products becomes much more significant. While this is a much more complex calculation than the operational phase, we can be much more precise, since the manufacturing process(es) is/are much more precise and repeatable. You know what they say when you "assume", so leave the assumptions for the in-use phase and your LCA tool. This session looks at how a number of leading manufacturers from various industries and tackled their products' embodied carbon proactively, with real-life examples of what and how data-driven design, manufacturing and sourcing decisions were made to drive down environmental impact, without damaging profit margins.
