Inspired by first-hand experiences from his mother (a Diabetes Specialist Nurse in Milton Keynes) Product Design student Tom Lambi has created two innovative solutions that will streamline District Nurse procedures, empower patient independence and alleviate pressure on NHS resources.
1. Frontero Technologies introduces an insulin needle dosette box service, enabling patients to independently and painlessly change needles, reducing reliance on District Nurses due to the carefully toleranced design. Fresh dosette boxes are delivered and collected weekly by Pharmacy deliveries, with used ones disposed of properly following infection control protocols with a groundbreaking 50% recycling rate.
2. Complementing this is an insulin pen pump attachment, ergonomically designed for arthritic patients to prioritise comfort and pain reduction during independent insulin administration. The pump attachment is simple to attach and is held securely in place by a silicone strap, the colour of which reflects and reminds the patient of the type of insulin inside the pen.
Designer Tom Lambi emphasises “Together, these products have the potential to reduce district nurse visits from up to 28 times per week to zero visits per week, per patient. This reduction is crucial in alleviating Nurses workload and releasing vital resources to other patients within the community. Additionally, it also gives patient’s back their independence to live and control their own daily lives.”
Ultimately, these products offer a unique alternative from existing solutions that focus solely on insulin pen dexterity issues. Frontero Technologies address the broader challenges faced by District Nurses and patients by tackling the growing environmental and financial burden of diabetes care faced by the NHS.
